Madrasmarkets recently completed a survey of 20+ organisations
in Chennai of size 10-1700 employees on the process of appraisals.
The objectives of the appraisal were to survey the problems found
with performance appraisal systems found commonly among these
organisations. Open ended, unstructured, direct interviews were
conducted to collect responses. The types of people who participated
included the appraisers, appraisees, and HR departments.
This document talks about a
list of 27 issues faced in a performance appraisal system as reported
by the participants. Reading these would support you to know the
stages needed to be followed in the appraisal cycle and the issues
that will come up. The study also gives concrete pointers to the
issues faced which inturn would support to bolster your appraisal
system. It also inlcudes some best practices
If anything is clear it is that
at many organisations there is hardly any performance improvement
due to appraisals. The HR people agreed that the system has barely
caused any changes to their own performance ! Overworked, in-experienced
HR staff would have to take most of the blame for letting loose
a potentially dangerous system as appraisal without training or
warning. It is equally true that many HR staff do not know the
difference between training and development and what appraisal
can do and cannot do.
It is sad that appraisals which is a powerful mechanism for human
development remains as a dormant tool in most of the companies.
